Newspaper Advertisement Design

I have created some newspaper advertising design for local newspaper "Berita Harian" at Singapore since 10 months old, my client are my big boss :D. Here are some general design ideas for newspaper advertising. Please read The Elements of Advertising Design chapter for more information.

1. Your newspaper advertising has a zero percent chance of succeeding if your prospect doesn’t notice it. Attention is everything in newspaper advertising. You need visual impact [photos], white space, a distinctive border, font, angles, or whatever it takes to stand out on the page. You newspaper advertising must be distinctive, unusual, and it should contrast with the other ads on the page. Be different.

2. Paste your ad into the newspaper to get an idea of whether or not it will stand out.

3. Where your ad is placed absolutely matters. If your quarter-page ad falls against the fold of the paper, your readership will be cut by half. Poor placement just cost you one half of your customers. Buy a different shape ad that will guarantee you an outside placement.

What is the paper offering? Run of press [ROP] positioning means that the publisher is free to place your ad anywhere in the normal pages of the paper.

With a preferred position, your ad goes in a specific section, or near the top of a page that has reading matter on it. A near reading [NR] position is placement anywhere on a page near reading matter.

You want your ad to be on a page where people spend time reading. The longer they stay on the page with your ad the better. You normally will pay a premium of 10% - 50% for good position, but it’s probably worth it. Good positioning could double or triple your response rate.

4. Use only serif typeface for copy. It boosts reading speed, and can increase comprehension by up to 300% over other fonts.

5. Editorial style advertising increases readership by over 50%. With editorial style advertising, the copy is laid out like a regular news story. The word "advertisement" always appears above the copy. If you have a story to tell, think about using editorial style advertising.

6. Your newspaper advertising should be easy to look at and easy to read. Poor use of capitalization, bolding, or italics will decrease reading comprehension by 50%. Bad sentence structure will also reduce comprehension.

7. Use #12 font for copy. Use #14 font if your customers are senior citizens.

8. Don’t use technical jargon. You will lose way too many readers.

9. Reversed copy gets attention in newspaper advertising, but it is hard to read. If you use it, keep the copy very short, and the font very big.

10. Make sure photos face into your ad, not toward a competitors ad.

11. Make sure your newspaper advertising looks different from your competitor's. Don’t advertise for them.

12. Vary sentence and paragraph length. Eight words per sentence will get the highest readership.

13. A smaller ad should have a single focus – one solution for one problem.

14. Busy layouts often work better than clean, balanced ads because they keep the reader involved.

15. Use benefit captions under your photos in all of your newspaper advertising. These will get read.

16. Word your offer carefully and clearly. Your offer is a promise about the level of service you will deliver to your customer's. Your offer will set your customers expectations, so you want to be very clear.

17. Coupons get the highest response rate for all printed marketing materials. Use one if you can in your newspaper advertising.

What is a web banner?
A web banner can be a single image (.gif or .jpg), a flash movie or a composite of different elements such as graphics, flash and or HTML code.

What is a banner impression?
Banner impression measures the number of times the banner is displayed, either on a web page or in a separate browser window as a pop-up or pop-under advertisement. Thus, 1000 impressions mean that the banner has been displayed 1000 times.

What is CPM?
Cost Per thousand iMpressions is an effective method of pricing web banner ads. It is the cost for displaying a banner 1000 times. Thus, if a banner ad space has a CPM of $10, it means that the cost of displaying a banner space one thousand times on that space is $10.

What is CTR?
Click Through Ratio determines the effectiveness of a banner ad in terms of click-thrus. It is a ratio of the number of times the banner was clicked on by the viewer and the number of times the banner was displayed. Thus, if a banner has been displayed 1000 times and has been clicked 50 times, its CTR is 50:1000 or 1:20. Changing this CTR into a percentage value yields 5% (1/20 * 100); thus, 5% of the impressions have lead to clicks on the banner.

What is CPC?
Cost Per Click is the price you pay for one click on your banner. It can easily be calculated using CPM and CTR values.

Web Banner Design Tips

Here are a few web banner tips that I would like to share with you all. To create a good banner you should always look at it from the perspective of the viewer. That said, let me detail the tips for web banners.

Nothing beats a good eye-catching punch line
When thinking of the copy for a banner; you need to spend a lot of time in creating a catchy phrase, something that will arouse the interest of the viewers and entice them to click on the banner. The punch line should be a small phrase, just a few words and should be visually appealing (correct usage of colors and fonts).
Good copy
A successful banner has excellent copy. Be sure to spend ample time thinking about what would interest the surfer. Another rule of thumb for good copy is to keep it short and simple. The text should support the banner punch line and should be informative and practical, making the viewer curious or bringing out a smile. Preferably, the copy should end with the same catchy phrase as on your web site unless the banner punch line is the same.

Relevant content in banners
Make sure that the pictures displayed in the banner are relevant to the products/services you are offering on your site. A woman in a skimpy bikini would surely attract the attention of male surfers and get a click but, if your site sells electronic goods, the visitor is sure to leave your site before making a purchase. You, thus, end up with high-click thrus and negligible sales.
Including logo and web site URL in banners
If your ad campaign is a brand building exercise, it is advisable to include BOTH the logo and the web site address in the banner. For other types of banners, you might like to include the two, but make sure that they don't dilute the banner punch line or the copy. In such cases, it's best to keep the logo and the URL together either on the right or the left side of the banner. The logo should be made small and the URL can be displayed in a very small font size.
Clichés work!
Statistics show that the best call to action on a web banner is the trite phrase "Click here". Its very presence increases the click-thru rate. The phrase should be displayed long enough (2-3 seconds), preferably in the last frame of an animated banner and can itself be animated - made to blink or change color.
Web banner file size
Keep the banner file size to a minimum. The reason is simple. Since banners are generally displayed at the top of web pages, they should load before the visitor has a chance to scroll down grabbing immediately. However, decreasing the file size of banners leads to tradeoffs in animation and the number of colors used (in animated GIF banners).
How long should an animated banner run?
Studies have shown that a typical web surfer spends less than 10 seconds looking at the top of a web page. Thus, a web banner has to display all its content in this time. The call to action, which would usually be in the last frame of an animated banner, should be displayed within this time frame, else the banner loses its efficacy.

Banner advertising is by far the most popular and widespread form of advertising on the Internet, almost every website has some form of banner advertising on it. There's just no escaping the banner on the net.

Even though we have all read the news about the declining effectiveness of banners on the web, I still believe that with the right 'ingredients' banners can be a good source of visitors and income for most webmasters.

Banner ad design is an art unto itself. Creating effective banners ads can be an ellusive task. Our banner ad designers have created a list of their favorite banner ad design tips, sharing what they have learned over the years. Different areas of banner ad design are discussed such as creative concepts, design techniques, messaging, and technical issues.

When color is used correctly, it can add impact and clarity to your banner message. Color can emphasize, highlight, and lead your end users to a call-to-action (i.e. clicking on your banner). Color can also be used to trigger emotion.

When color is used incorrectly, it can compromise your message and confuse your target audience. The interpretation of a color depends on culture, physiology of the eye, readability, your target audience's profession or industry, and personal preference.

The type of profession you are in should influence what colors you will select for your banner ad. In the finance industry, the color red signifies financial loss. In the health care industry, the color red is associated with danger or an emergency. So using the color red in the financial or health care banner designs would not be a wise choice.

Blues, teals, and greens tend to be safe color selections because many of their psychological interpretations include security, professionalism, reliability, conservatism, and technology. The key to making a professional brochure is to stick to the basics. These ten tips will provide the crucial elements for creating a professional brochure design:

What’s out there. Collect and study brochures from around the community. What makes one design more appealing than another? You can develop your sense of good design by carefully studying other designs.

Voice / Audience. Who are you trying to reach with your information, and how do you want to come across to them? Choose a font that will express the voice you desire (professional, humorous, casual…) and still keep your message clear. Avoid using more than two or three font styles, so as not to distract the reader from your message. Vary the font size of individual parts of the design according to their importance. Avoid excessive underlining, which can cause clutter and make text harder to read.

Less is more. What is the purpose of your brochure? Use the 'Brochure Checklist' to decide what information is necessary, and arrange the components of your brochure in order of importance. The clearer you are about the order of importance within your information, the better your brochure will be. Make sketches and move the various elements around. Try repositioning one or more elements to see how your design is affected.

Bars and boxes. Use bars and boxes sparingly. Boxes, borders and bars work well for directing one^’s attention and separating busy areas--but too many can make your brochure design look cluttered or confusing. Explore other options for grouping and separating.

Negative space. Use 'empty' space to create a relationship between the contents and the page. Bring the specific information into focus on the page by adjusting the space around it. The amount of negative space in a design affects its overall tone of lightness or heaviness. As a person shouting in a noisy room stands out when the room suddenly becomes quiet, so does a word stand out on a busy page where the busyness suddenly stops.

Keep it simple. Keep your message in mind and include only those ingredients necessary to communicate the message. If you choose graphic elements to ornament your brochure, ask yourself whether they help to direct the reader’s attention, or simply create distraction.

Bigger, bolder and brighter. Once you have determined the relative importance and sequence of the particular components in your message, you will be ready to consider how to treat each of them. The most important items should obviously receive more of your reader’s attention. They should be larger, bolder, brighter, or in some other way made to stand out from the rest of your message.

Color. Color can be applied as ink on paper or as the paper itself. There are hundreds of paper colors available, yet some of the most effective brochures are done in only one or two colors. Black and white brochures can often be more dramatic than color. The cost of printing should be considered before making a color decision.

Paper selection. Paper comes in all sizes, colors, and textures. Ask your teacher about paper options. Using recycled paper can add an interesting flair to your brochure design, and it helps reduce the impact we make on our natural resources. However, using recycled paper can increase the cost of your brochure, because it is generally more expensive than regular paper.

Proofread! You should proofread your final design several times before having it printed. Once printed, it’s too late to fix an error that you didn't spot. Read lines backwards to check for errors. Step back and look critically at the overall layout.
